Distance

Long-distance-relationships are hard.

My girlfriend is German, we met while she was studying at Warwick, but only got together once she was back in Germany, been together about a year now. Basically, things are going well.

But occasionally things happen that are much harder in this kind of relationship. Tonight, she fell and cut her head open, so I got a call from her friend letting me know that she was in hospital.

I think she’s ok – being kept in overnight for observation, but haven’t been able to talk to her yet.

These things are much harder when you’re in a different country.

I hope that she’s alright! I have a vague idea of the difficulties of long distance relationships as it were. Its not quite the same, but my dad and brother live in Canada.. and it is more difficult to be there for people when they’re 3000 miles away. Still, it works in its own funny sort of way. Anyway I’m sure you didn’t need to know that, just thought I’d let you know that I empathise with you.

Yeah, i do sympathise with you. I’m in my first year and wasn’t really expecting to find someone so soon. But as soon as i met this guy who lives in my hall, i liked him. As i got to know him more, i realised how much i really did like him. Then one night, he told me that he really liked me and i was so happy, it was perfect. That was until he said he had to move back to his home country [Portugal] at the end of Term 1 as he wasn’t permitted to stay any longer, and therefore a relationship was pretty much impossible. That cut me up. I’m still really confused as to what to do. It hurts a lot. It’s really good to hear that long-distance relationships can work though, like for you and your girlfriend.

can totally empathise – was seeing this girl in stockholm and vice versa as often as possible, ryanair took all my money! It eventually became impossible as she had a 6 month trip planned to thailand (the usual) etc. my advice is to hang in there – seeing them each time is as good as seeing them for the first time all over – though there’ll be a tough descision to make when things need to move on and one of you has to relocate.

but thats ages away! enjoy the jetsetting and financially ruinous 3 hour phone calls etc and be glad you can go out whenever without her berating you for whatever reason, and rake in much kudos for having an international ladyfriend!

    Good luck!
