My Photo Gear
So what cameras and stuff do I tend to take with me?
Here’s an adaption of a blog post from a while back, including my new digital toys.
Someone asked what I shoot with, so for interest, the stuff I tend to take out:
Point & Shoot camera: Nikon Coolpix 5200 which I preferred to the Canon Ixus cameras at the time – I really wanted a “bring everywhere” ultra tiny, and that’s what I got.
Shooting Digital
- Sometimes, Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D, if I think I’m going to be doing a lot of wide-angle stuff. There’s less distortion on this lens than on the 18-70, and it fits the polarizer properly.
That’s pretty much the minimum kit. I keep UV filters on the front of all the lenses except the 50mm. I also carry with a 77mm polarizing filter (Also Nikon, buy it in the US where it’s half the price). I stick it all in a Lowepro Toploader 70 AW with a lens case on the side for the 24–120.
This lot is suprisingly compact – when I interrailed around scandinavia, I carried this as well as full camping equipment.
If I’m going heavier I’ll also bring my:
- El Cheapo Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G which has pretty shoddy pincushion distortion, but is okay as long as you don’t want to do architecture with it
- Gitzo G2228 tripod.
And use either an Orion AW or Specialist 80 – they only make the 85 now.
Shooting Film:
- Nikon F80
- Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D
- Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 AFS VR G
- Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
- Usually a Nikon A2 warm up filter. If I’m planning on doing any b/w I’ll bring with 77mm Yellow and Orange filters as well.
I like Fuji slide film, mostly Velvia 50, although I also shoot on Provia 100 and 400, and I’m having a play with Velvia 100 at the moment. B/W is mostly Ilford FP4 or HP5, although I shoot a little Tri-X and T-Max.
Bags, tripod, polarizer as above.
